Alentejo Region

Vinho Regional Alentejano (Regional Alentejo Wine)

Our two family estates, Vale do Chafariz and Monte Santa Maria do Guadiana, are quitely situated in Serpa, Portugal. This unique region encapsulates a world where time has virtually stood still. Bursting with a rich history and a deep sense of culture, one is easily transported into a long-ago world of kings and queens. Its vast land is lined with cork oaks, centuries old olive trees and luscious green vineyards. White-washed villages, filled with cobblestoned streets and castles long forgotten, are dispersed throughout this serene landscape. It is here where we find the beautiful city of Serpa. A city first established during the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, now boasting Old World charm with New World possibilities. Serpa, which long ago expanded beyond its original castle walls, captures the best of what Alentejo has to offer. Cultivated from the sun-drenched soiled of the Alentejo region, Vinhos de Serpa boasts a variety of wines to please all wine lovers.

Our Terroir

A new wine steeped in history
and culture

Monge e Filhas is dedicated to keeping the integrity of our land, and the unique characteristics drawn from its history, to make each and every bottle of wine memorable.

Geography

Located in the Southern region, Alentejo occupies more than a third of Portugal’s land mass. It boasts soft rolling hills and plains that are marked by vineyards, olive groves, cork trees, and interior lakes.

Climate

A Mediterranean climate provides Alentejo the perfect conditions to produce rich, bold, and aromatic wines. Summers are marked by sun-drenched days of hot, dry temperatures that are alleviated by cooler nights. Winters provide a relief by cooler temperatures and rainier months.

Soils

Clay, schist, granite, gravel, marble, and limestone are common soil types lining the Alentejo landscape.

Grapes

Portugal is home to a record number of grape varieties. On our vineyards, you will find such varieties as: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Antão Vaz, Arinto, Viognier, and Chardonnay.

Taste

Our red wines are bold and full-bodied, rich in tannins, and have an aroma of wild and red berries. Our white wine selections are milder, slightly acidic, and filled with notes of tropical fruits.

Winemaking

Our grapes are harvested yearly by hand. They are then crushed, fermented, and aged in our winery, or Adega. Utilizing both stainless steel and oak barrels during our process helps us produce a wine suitable for all tastes.
